I started vermicomposting recently, but yesterday, I opened the box and there were tons of nats flying out of?

Question:it, what did I do wrong? and what can I do to fix the problem??

Answers:
You have done nothing wrong. One of the natures ways of assisting decomposing is the use of insects, maggots, worms, and other creepy crawlies to help break down your compost into a nutritious mix.. I would venture to guess that there is some sort of protein in your mix. Egg shells maybe?

that happens, if you dont put a lid on that will help you could try a air tight seal type container that happens when i dump my grass trimming in recycle bin nats get in there some how so yeah either don't cover it or try a air tight containor ... good luck that stuff is great for a garden...
I tried vermicomposting too last year. And I got the gnats so I called the local botanic garden because I know that they have experts and courses on composting. They said that the bugs were fruit flies-totally harmless-but who needed them. They said that I should microwave the food scraps before dumping them in the container. That worked for awhile and then it started again. I did not want to live with the fruit flies so I was forced to dump the whole thing in my garden. I'm sure that the worms were very happy in my garden until winter set in .
Good luck.
