Mealy bugs?

Question:I recently discovered that my Jasmine plant is infected with mealy bugs. The plant was originally in my room, although now I moved it. Could there be mealy bugs in my room? or do they only stay on the plant? How did they get there? Am I in danger?

Answers:
Mealybugs are plant feeders only so did not occur in your room without a plant present. Likely there was a small population on the plant to begin with or at one time it shared a space with another infested plant. Without predators or control the mealybugs reproduced until they become noticeable. You personally are not in danger.

The plant can be taken outside and hosed down with water to simply dislodge the 'bugs. This will eliminate the great majority of the 'bugs but you must be vigilant because smallest ones escape by being in leaf crevices, etc. so you need to keep an eye out for further population explosions. If you have the time you can just dab each one with a cotton swab and alcohol.

Insecticidal soaps are useful. If it is a heavy infestation I sometimes use horticultural grade oil spray (preferred) or malathion.

Good luck! :-)
