What is the purpose of a mosquito?

Question:My little girl is 8 and is allergic to mosquitoes. She wants to know why they were ever put here on earth. Also, if anyone has any ideas on how to get rid of mosquitoes outside, that would be GREAT!! It has rained here all summer and the water is standing everywhere. Hard to get rid of the little boogers when they have the perfect breeding grounds!

Answers:
I've wondered that myself. I've even asked that question and tried to research it. The only answers I've been able to come up with is that they are a food source for other creatures like birds and bats. I can't think of anything that specializes on them so I don't believe they are vital to our existence like flies and bees are.

I was going to leave a smart*** answer but since it's your little girl who wants to know, I'll tell the truth: Bird food. The birds need that high protein food because their metabolism is so high.
They were put on earth to send mankind into a scratching frenzy.

I live near a massive sewer system, so I've got mosquitoes everywhere as well. At our house, we use these spiral-incense things we buy at the supermarket, but they only keep the mosquitoes away, not eliminate them. Pesticides should work, but they're harmful to the body, so I don't suggest using them.

You can also spray DEET on your body to keep them away from you.

I suggest you look for breeding sites in all the nooks and crannies of your garden and around your house, and destroy them as quickly as possible.

Hope this helps!

The mosquito has the same purpose as any other living creature. To go and populate the earth, and to be food for the other animals. It would seem that the mosquito also serves it's purpose in transferring disease from one animal to another. This can build immunity to many otherwise deadly diseases. Unfortunately your daughter is one of the people who can not tolerate the bite. But at least in today's world, there are repellents and medications.
mosquitos are a vital part of the food chain, the are a source of food for other insects bats and birds. to eliminate then from your yard and area takes a massive effort of dilligence. you must eliminate the breeding grounds and break the cycle of egg laying/ birth of mosquitos. there are mosquito control granuals you can put on lawn areas, and Dunks, for bodies of water (fairly)effective. i use them in areas that tend to puddle and drain slowly. as long as your daughter doesnt directly eat this... it is harmeless to animals and humans.
