Would like help on my new yard?
Question:My new yard has been sitting and growing weeds for over 2 years we have cleaned up the yard but I don't know how to start the grass or when I should and how to keep the weeds from growing back PLEASE help thanks
Answers:
First use a chemical spray to kill off all of the weeds. Then use a rototiller to loosen up the soil and then remove the dead weeds and rake it smooth. Next use a sreader to plant the grass seed and let it grow. Don't forget to water. You can keep the weeds away by fertilizing. Talk to a local garden center for recommendations on good products for your area.
The easiest way for you to deal with this would be to lay down sod. However, since that can be expensive, it may not be the way you wish to go. In that case you first need to decide if you want warm or cool season grasses. Warm season grasses are Zoysia, Bermuda, and Buffalo grass. Cool season grasses are Fescue, Ky Bluegrass Ryegrass etc. After you know what you want, your basic steps to Lawn establishment would be to test the soil and amend if recommended. Till the yard including any ammendments or fertilizers. Grade the soil. Apply seed, then rake it in. The most important thing is seed to soil contact! Mulch it and keep it watered. Once established, keep weeds under control with pre and post emergence herbicides (or use a weed and feed product).
