Any hints for looking after and growing Chard?
Question:I would be grateful if anyone could offer some advise on growing chard. Any hints and tips etc.. Thanks!
Answers:
Chard is very easy to grow. It doesn't like a lot of heat (will cause it to bolt, no not run away but go to seed), snails too adore chard so don't forget to use bait.
I plant it in the fall and early spring and have had some plants that lasted a full year.
Harvest the outter leaves (the ones the snails didn't eat) Pull it out if it goes to seed.
Saute or steam. The french, for some reason, call the stem part the chard and don't eat the greens, go figure.
I grew chard on my allotment a few years back. It didn't didn't require any special treatment. Once it has germinated thin and the plants are large enough to handle, thin them out to about 6 inches apart, after that just keep them watered well in dry weather.
I plant mine in my flower beds and cut it as I need it and it keeps growing again
Keep the slugs off it. The stems make a Nice quiche.
just treat it like cabbage, keep well watered, the stalks chopped up are delicious on salad
