What is this rodent in our back yard, it's as large as a possum or raccoon...?

Question:The tail is furry, looks round, but not longer than the body. It's brown. We live in CT, and have a waterway beside our house. I've seen it swim. It does not seem to be a muskrat because the tail is not scaly.

Answers:
Ground hog, maybe.
