How many tons of rock do i need to cover 600 square feet?
Question:i want to spend the least amount of money as i can.
Answers:
I figure a ton per 100 sq. ft. of area... so 6.
One m³ of crushed rock weighs about 1.5 ton. If you want to cover to a thickness of 4 inches, that would be about .15ton per m². 600 ft² are about (3048 x .3048 x 600)m² = 55.74m².
Therefore you would need about 55.74 x .15 = 8.3 ton.
Of course if you make the cover only 2 inches thick, you would only need about 4 ton.
Don't listen to these other jamokes. The first thing you need to know is the weight of the rock you are going to use. If you want to keep the weight ( and presumably the cost) down I would suggest using lava rock. This rock is light in weight and will also be easier to install because you can shovel more of it without tiring. Figure on using a 3" deep layer of rock. You will need 5 1/2 cubic yards.
It depends on what kind of rock and how deep you want it to be and how little you want to spend, because you get what you pay for. There's one website where you can go to take care of all of this. Go to www.1800TOPSOIL.com and click on the calculator and it will tell you how much you need. Then click on the national locator and it will tell you who's local who can deliver it to you. Good luck!
Ziggy's answer was right for gravel , or crushed stone (Attn: John! ;D), the usual stone mulching material . If something significantly different, ask the supplier.
