Pinetrees, when is a good time to trim them? I know Oaks you trim when they are not in their growing season.?

Question:When is it time to trim Maples as well? I lost a beautiful Oak tree trimming it which sped up the disease I didn't know it had. I moved here for trees, storms have taken 3 more, I don't want to loose anymore. HELP

Answers:
You can prune dead or damaged branches at any time.

In general, pine trees require little pruning. When you do prune a pine, they should only be pruned by pinching back or shearing the new candles, which is typically done in June.

Late winter/early spring is generally a good time for pruning most shade trees. It's easy to see what needs to be pruned since the leaves are off. Wounds tend to heal, or callus over, faster in this time period. It's best to complete pruning before buds break in early spring. Also, avoid "bleeders" such as maple, birch, and elm. These should be pruned in winter when fully dormant. Small cuts can be made on maples in summer. It may be best to wait until fall with oaks due to oak wilt disease. In general, you should not prune trees and shrubs after July 4th. and before they go dormant if you live in an area where there are cold winters. Pruning induces new growth in a plant and this growth needs to harden-off before winter. The hardening process begins when trees & shrubs detect the daylight hours shortening. Prunning during this period is a risk & can result in significant dieback if we get a very cold or early winter.

FALL TIME IS THE BEST
Most mature trees need very little trimming. You should only trim to take out dead wood. I have about 6 pines on my property and have not trimmed them in 15 years.

Consult a tree consultant (not a tree trimming company!!). They can tell you what needs to be done and when!

Good Luck!!
