Question:it goes onto allotments and I was told the hedge has to be kept at three feet short all the time, but the first six years I lived here it wasnt, so how do I find out who owns it, and my rights to privacy in my garden, you cant sit out in summer with the allotment gate right there and men gawping. uk

Answers:
land registry office and the council plans.

you house would have had its records amend when you bought it to show, you are the owner of whatever land belongs to you.

some property, might not own the land, but have rights of access across other people. complex stuff.

Start with the land registry and council.

Legally, you would need to have the property line surveyed.
Your Land Registry documents should show you who is responsible for each boundary. You can download from the Land Registry web site. If it's not you, the allotments probably belong to your local council who let them out through an allotments association. There's nothing to stop you planting another hedge, or putting up a screen, inside your boundary.
Your local council office should be able to tell you
Look at the T-marks on your property deeds.
HI, you should have all that info in your house deeds, if you do not have them they will be with your solicitor (from when you bought the house) or with your bank.
My husband cant understand why three feet short? He would want to know WHO told you this , as if you have had it higher for six years, I presume someone recently has told you it must be cut.
If no-one has told you , to cut it , don't bother as in my opinion you need your privacy and security as a six foot hedge is harder to look over and vault.!
The allotments come under the jurisdiction of your local council. It may be the Trees & Parks Dept. who are responsible for the hedge cutting. On your deeds you should see marked whose boundary fence it is. If the deeds are lodged with a mortgage lender, a call to their record's office (or head office) to determine the boundary ownership may be necessary. If you have a Council owned property you will have to contact them for the answer.

Usually, a boundary of each garden is determand by the vence , if a plant ,,ie a bush has its roots on your side of the vence,, then it is your responcability to trim it,, if you want, but if the root is on the other side of the vence,, then its the property of the other person and they can cut it down,,, however if the branches come into your garden ,they must ask you if they can cut the branches off,, if the branches are from the next doors and you want to cut them down,,you must ask them,, and,, if next doors agree ,,you must offer the branches back to the owner,, or if you have not his permiton ,, he can refuse,, and you do cut them he might get upset but if he agrees (in most cases they do agree) but next doors do not want the cut items... What are you going to do with unwanted branches?? which is another question..
In your case, you mention a gate,, if the plants or hedge is growing around your gate posts,,,, (as often they do), ,and there is a road, or foot, path that passes by, then you are responcable for looking after both sides of the vence , if you let it overgrow,, on the outside of the vence, gate, or what ever
it may become an obstruction which may cause people to move around the obstruction,,,(overgrown hedge) ,,and if there is a public highway that person(mothers with prams )are put into danger of stepping onto the road,so you must take care of the outside as much as the inside of your garden, if its in your garden or on the inside of the gate/vence or what ever ,,,,,,,you can grow it as high as you want and as wide as you want
you could if you dont,, (use the gate) ,,grow things like creeping roses(madomalfredcarrier and alberien roses )which grow fast,, and are good climbers, besides they are really nice to have in your garden and not expensive to buy from a local garden centre,,,,but thy will block the view from the people peeping in
mmmmm good idea mmmm
BUT before cutting and growing the hedges high and wide,,and plantinjg roses and things,,,unless you own the property, check its ok with the landlord, and check with your local council
hope this info answers,, your problem and you have many safe and happy sunbathing days
