What's an easy, clean fruit tree to care for?

Question:I want to buy my dad a fruit tree for Father's Day. I'm leaning towards a pear tree. What's are some that won't make a mess all over the yard?

Answers:
Apple trees are a nice bet--something like Granny Smith, Fuji, or Gala. Pears are good too--but certain cultivars are subject to blight which is a serious bacterial disease that eventually kills the tree. Warren and Seckel are blight resistant--but there are several that would do the job. Talk to a nurseryman in the know.

Avocado is good, with occasional leaf raking.
Pear trees are easy but it really depends on the zone you are in. Try Bartlette Pear or Keiffer Pear.
If your dad is in zone 8-10, then I'd get a lemon or orange tree instead. They require little care.

My neighbor has a pear tree and the neighborhood squirrels love it. They take a bite then throw the pears everywhere.
