What are some hearty shrubs to plant that will thrive year round in the northeast?
Question:I like in Long Island, NY.
Answers:
Do you want something evergreen or deciduous? Do you want something that will bloom? Some evergreen varieties would be arborvitae or something from the yew family. If you want a sturdy shrub that will give you small blossoms in the spring and color until winter, you should try a barberry hedge. There is a burgundy leaf variety that gets small yellow blossoms in the spring, has green leaves in the summer and burgundy leaves in the fall. It is impervious to pollution, insects, animals, poor soil, and drought conditions and will require very little pruning. Spireas are a very nice shrub. It is a deciduous shrub, so it will lose it leaves in the fall. There are several different kinds you can get with different colors and heights. They can be cut back a ways too if you need to shape them.
Here is a website for more info on them.
