they sell these little tools at any home and garden center you just push them in with your foot but they are small and will take alot of time
I have heard of shoes with spikes in the bottom of them to aerate yards, if you are handy, you can make a pair from old shoes or boots. Or you can look crazy and take a hard rake and pound it around the yard, making holes all over the lawn.
Lawn aeration sandals, $12.95 plus shipping, ~ $20 total.

And if you need a little cardio/leg excercise....bonus!
With a garden fork.
Get a garden fork and make holes all over the lawn, about 3-4 inches deep and about 6 inches apart (approximately). Next, sprinkle fine sand all over the punctured areas and then (important!), brush the sand into the holes using a sweeping brush so that you end up with sand filled holes. This is the BEST way to aerate your lawn, and the sand is vital because without it the holes will just close up next time it rains; sand in the holes improves the drainage. You only need to do this once every year (or two years), depending on how much your lawn needs it.
If you have a small lawn just wear some golf shoes or some spiked aerating sandals to aerate your lawn as you walk behind the push mower. For the aerating sandals see the website:
