Can I replant this crabapple?

Question:I just picked a crabapple from my neighbors yard on my walk and I was wondering if I could replant it? Its tart and sour, but I like the taste. Is there a core in the center? Should I just put it into the ground? I live in southern Wisconsin.

Answers:
Yes you can plant it, however it may not turn out like the apple that you are eating!!

Most fruit trees have been grafted onto special root stock to help them grow better. If you really want a crab apple (eating variety), I suggest that you go to your local nursery in the early spring (January in California, later if you have snow) and buy bare root crab apples (eating types). This will give you trees that come "true" to type!!

Good Luck!!

A crabapple is more or less a miniature apple. You can plant the whole thing in the ground, or start it in a pot for later transplantation.
