I live in NE Ohio. Now that it's June, the air often smells strongly of bleach. What plant/bug is doing it?
Question:To me, the air smells strongly of bleach. Others have described it as more of a really strong cut plant smell or even B.O-ish, but everybody agrees that it's really strong and really foul. It also seems to smell stronger at night, and I think it's a plant because it's definitely stronger in certain areas than others. If anybody knows what is making this horrible summer odor, it would really ease my mind.

Just a thought... Do the lawns you identified as having this "smell" happen to be very green and seem to be weed free? I would almost bet that the problem here is either the smell of fertilizer or a weed treatment. (ie - weed and feed...) I am very sensitive to these smells, and have noticed almost exactly the smell you are mentioning - right after my neighbors had their lawn chemicaly treated...
its called a pool bug! the neighbors pool is bugging you.LOL!!
just kidding could be true though.
God bless BOB
Do you have any factories west of you home?
They could be running certain applications at night to avoid getting spotted.
I work at a chemical company and some operators relax more at night time then during the day and we release non-toxic, yet foul smelling emissions some times. Some ordors can travel several miles if the wind is just right.
It might be a skunk cabbage if a wild plant, or a dracununculus if it's a horticultural variety... That smells like a decomposing body, actually... ;) I've never heard of a plant that smells like bleach. But skunk cabbage is a bit B-Oish and grows everywhere...

We also live in NE Ohio and have never noticed this. The only things that are natural that have a lot of odor this time of year are the black locust trees, and they could never be classified as a horrible smell. I would look around the neighborhood to see what might be making the smell. Industries, water and sewage treatment plants are common sources. We have a sewage pump station down the street that smells pretty bad this time of year, but it's east of us and we only notice it when we drive by the area.
Could it be the chlorine in the water? That is what I smell this time of the year as everyone is beginning to water their lawns. Cities put more chlorine in the city water this time of the year due to the heat. I also think that the heat brings out the smell.
That is my guess!
