I know that using fresh sawdust on a garden is unacceptable because it binds or leaches out the nitrogen.?

Question:What about wood mulch? Does it also use up the nitrogen and do I need to add more nitrogen to my beds that I am using cypress mulch on?

Answers:
The faster a wood decomposes the more nitrogen becomes an issue. Cypress decays slowly and generally doesn't pose too big a problem, which is why it makes superior mulch. RScott

Wood uses nitrogen as it decomposes. If you use a balanced fertilizer on your garden, you should have no problem with a wood mulch.
