You shear them with a hedge trimmer. Either a gas powered, electrical, or manual cutting shears will do the job. Shape them up and down by shearing off the scraggly ends on each side, all the way around. You can lower the top by just whacking off as much as you want, level across the top. They are very easy to prune. If it is in a hedge planting, they can be pruned to match up and to keep an even appearance. Hope this answers your question.

I would be very careful. They are delicate and I never trim mine. You could damage or kill them.
