What to do with tomatoe plants?

Question:i have been given three tomatoe plants about 18 ins high. They have to go in a pot as there is no room in the garden for them, and I have not grown tomatoes before so how do I treat them?

Answers:
Put them in big pots with a 5 foot cane in the pot. It helps if you use compost with plenty of organic matter in it, but they'll still grow if you use mud. Tie the main stem to the cane and pinch out any side-shoots that form between the main stem and a leaf. The plants should form trusses - that's branches of flowers that develop into fruit. If they are growing outdoors, pinch out the top of the plant once you've got 4 trusses (or the fruit won't ripen). Wait till the fruit goes red - eat. (Warning, they don't taste like the ones from Tescos!)

What you have to do is make sure they get plenty of sunlight and water them everyday.

I have around 14 pots full of tomatoes in my garden.

But try that and see how you go.
you are better off putting them in a grow bag and just watering them that's all i do but you can get a tomato plant feeding solution from garden centres
they needs loads of water otherwise will wilt in the sun very quickly.
i have tomato plants growing outside as well as in the greenhouse. the out side is growing in the pots and its doing ok it has flowers on . you can plant them in the pots too as long as pot is big enough. and make sure you put canes to support them. at the end of the season if the toms are not ripe you can take um off the bush and put them on your window sill to ripe they will soon ripe as long as you turn them everyday to face the light. good luck
and don't forget to remove the side shoots - any leaves which grow at the junction of the main stem and the large leaves, otherwise you'll get too much growth and no tomatoes.

a grow bag is the simplest and cheapest option, just cut slits in it and pop the plants in. they will need support. some cheap bamboo canes are ideal.

i hope you get enough sun to ripen the tomatoes where you are, the weather here in england is disgusting! we've had rain for the last six weeks.
They would do better in the ground than in a pot, but if there is no room then go for the pot but use a big one!
Tomatoes need room, sunlight , and plenty of water!! These plants will grow BIG be prepared to stake them for support!!
I have one in a 5-gallon bucket on the porch (the smell of the tomato vine seems to keep house flies and some of the other bugs away from the door).
I have 3 more in the backyard in the garden so I am going to see which did the best.
We always grown tomatoes. Here's what we do: They are always planted in the ground, but in your case we'll do the pot. When you plant it make sure it's roots aren't all the way to the bottom of the pot. About half way, this way it can have room for the roots. Then make sure you water it after you plant it. Go into the woods and cut yourself a stake. Once your plant gets about 12" or so you will want to stake it by simply putting the stake beside the plant not disturbing the plant. Take tie rags and tie your plant loosely as it grows. Tie under the "branch" to allow it to still grow. Make sure your dirt never dries out and they get enough sunlight. You may also want to break the starts off the bottom of the plant they are suckers and take from your plant. Enjoy
My neighbor does something interesting you may want to try for kicks, maybe with one of the plants. He has limited ground space and does his in pots as well, but he has them in a hanging pot. He cut a hole in the bottom of the pot, inserts the plant and lets it hang or grow upside down. It then grows downward and doesn't require staking. Gravity does the work for him. It's worked great for him oddly enough.
As you have no doubt noticed from the other answers, there are many tricks to growing tomatoes. Try a few, and if they work for you, great! In a short time you will be enjoying your own tomatoes, the supermarket tomatoes will never be as tasty as the fresh from the garden ones.
what type? some can be grown inside, in greenhouse, or outside. you can grow them in "grow bags". you can get them at your local garden centre. they like a sunny position. water regulary and feed with a liquid complete fertilizer. remove side shoots to help with cropping. to get the fruits to set, shake the inflorescences three times a week. this promotes pollination.
I always grow mine in pots. Make sure they get fed regularly and don't leave their feet in a puddle {overwater that is]. Oh and pitch out side shoots unless they are a bush variety.
