Hi Tanya,
I had the same problem. My neighbors have the nicest lawns. Well anyway I went the local Home Depot type store and bought Scotts Turf Builder and Weed Control.
I used a spreader to get an even coverage (this is important). Now my lawn is so thick and green. I really enjoy my yard now and all the weeds are gone. This took me about two seasons to accomplish but it was worth it.
The only disadvantage is it grows very fast. I am now looking for a new mower but that's ok with me.
water and fertilizer- just remember water is scarce and whatever you put on your lawn ends up in the water table ( you drink it!). a good organic fertilizer spread early spring and don't mow your lawn more often than every 7 days and don't mow it too short.
I got this secret from a farmer which is really amazing.
from march to october soak the grass with water. It means turn on your system for 20min for each station just once a week and see the deference.
from october to march do the same but for 10 min only.
Iused it and i adviced family and friends.
My grass is the best in the subdevision.
good luck
The best thing to do is go to a local retailer like Home Depot or Lowe's who sells lawn products. Tell them that you want a good lawn fertilizer that will make your lawn more robust and green. Tell them what kind of grass you have. There are some really good products out there that you can use by spreading around your lawn periodically that will accomplish this for you. If you don't mind spending a few buck, it may also be good to ask a lawn service or lawn pest control service to take a look at your lawn to make sure the real problem isn't bugs. There are a number of bugs that feed on your lawn and the soil and cause the lawn to be less healthy than it could be.
