What is the best way to find how many yards of mulch you need?
Question:
Answers:
A yard of mulch should cover right at 100 Square Feet, 3" deep.
Figure the length and width of your area to establish your square footage (for example, 10 feet x 10 feet + 100 Sq. Feet) and order accordingly.
Just buy extra, You can never have too much....
Decide how thick you want the mulch to be, and determine the size of the area you want to cover.
Say you want to cover a 10 ft by 30 ft area with 3 in of mulch:
* 10 ft. x 30 ft. = 300 sq ft of area to be covered.
* 3 in = 0.25 ft is the thickness of mulch desired.
* 300 sq ft x 0.25 ft = 75 cubic ft of mulch needed.
* 27 cu ft = 1 cu yd
* 75 cu ft / 27 = 2.7 cu yds
* Answer = you need to buy 2.7 cubic yards of mulch to cover a 300 square feet area with 3 inches of mulch.
Good luck!
Two prior posts mentioned mulching 3" deep. Interestingly, some brochure / online advertising belonging to reputable landscape supply companies in my area (SE US) that I have read in the past week recommends only going 2" deep. I say interesting because they could make 50% more by recommending and selling an extra inch of depth. But they believe 2" deep is sufficient. It will save you a considerable amount of money.
ALSO, be sure to clear new mulch away from the trunk area of any plants/small trees. When it gets wet, it will hold moisture in along the trunk, potentially causing it to rot and perhaps even killing it.
