Best Kind of grass to grows best in shaded areas?
Question:I have a large tree in my front yard and I need some help with which type of grass to plant and how.
Answers:
I don't try to grow grass under my big sycamore tree, which has also sent roots to the surface.
I planted clumps of "monkey" grass, which tolerates a range of soil types and sun/shade, then added granite boulders of varying sizes around the grass. You can add hostas or vinca to this arrangement for a natural-looking, no-mow section of your front yard. Some types of monkey grass and vinca are evergreen.
I have also added wild strawberries and a birdbath (for my birds) and wild violets. Note: hostas like enriched soil, so I add organic matter to the hosta planting holes.
Bent grass is best for shade
It all depends on what zone you live in. I live in zone 4 and the best grass for shade that will grow in zone 4 is fescue. It just depends on what zone you live in.
