Help with new St Augustine sod lawn?
Question:I sodded my lawn around the first of June. I put out some starter fertilizer shortly after and have kept it thoroghly watered. It is doing pretty good...nice and green...but this is my first lawn. There are a few weeds here and there that I would like to get rid of. I would also like it to grow in nice and thick. Also, I was shorted about a half-pallet. If I want to seed the areas that I couldnt cover, when should I do this? I know this will only come with time, but what steps should I take to ensure that it does happen? What kind of fertilizer should I use and when?
I dont know if this matters but I live in central Texas...near Austin.

Technically St. Augustine grass is a weed. It's prominent here in Florida. Scotts Bonus 8 is the best for that type of grass. It kills dollar weed and the other noxious things that grow in it. Fertilize early in the year and use an atrazine weed killer. Also a good insecticide keeps the sub surface bugs away. St. Augustine is prone to grubs and also fungus. For a new lawn, water daily for about fifteen minutes for the first thirty days until it takes root. Then about once a week. I hope this helps.
The seed and sod should do fine as long as it doesn't dry out.
Home depot has a fertilizer just for Texas turf, but I can't remember the name.
Good luck.
Seed warm season grasses in the spring. Warm season grasses such as yours go dormant in the winter and turn brown. In February anything that is green is a weed spray it with roundup to kill it.
