Oh we had the same problem a huge Silver Maple that shades all. Depending on where you live, if in the North (like I do) use some of the fine fescue grasses. They do very well in shade. If you live in the southern or warmer areas try the tall fescue grasses or St. Augustine grasses.
Do yourself a favor though and cut back as many of the lower branches as you can, it will help.
You could try using really good fertilizer OR use a falt rocks and lay them down flat all around underneath the tree then put funiture underneath. (it would be cute) OR you could take woodchips and make a larger area with no indended grass and have woodchips surrounding the tree.
You should try putting down topsoil and fertilizer. Then cultivate the lawn. Then put down grass seeds. Make sure you get the ones that grow well in shade. Some bags are a mix of grass that grow well in Shade and sun they also work.
try St Augustine grass..or even better go to a sod farm near you and ask them which grass is best they should be able to tell you!
