Mowing lawn question??
Question:i live in the northern usa. i was wondering if my lawn (during mowing season - april - october) grows faster if i mow it more often?? if i mow it less, will it grow slower?? i do fertilize and water well. my lawn is in beautiful condition. please advise. big joe
Answers:
The amount of times you mow does not determine how quickly it grows, rain, watering and fertilizing is what determines that
change its position
mowing unless you mow extremely low makes no difference. That is by mowing more or less often.
the more you feed the more the grass will grow.
Big Joe,
Great question for any homeowner. There is really a basic solution for your problem.
Fertilize four times a year with a granular 10-10-10 and minerals at the manuf. rate. Fert in April, early June, two weeks after Labor day, and a week after Halloween. Topseed the turf at 2lbs/1,000 ft. at the same time and irrigate immediately. Make sure you use a Certified (Blue Label)Seed mixture. This contains no weeds and has a 90% or better germination rate.
Fertilize it now!! Seed it now!! Irrigate it now as well !! Purchase a seed mixture which contains, for our area, a combination of Perennial Rye, Fine Fescue, and Perennial Blue. Make the mixture, in order, 50% Rye, 30%Fescue, and 20% Blue. Since you missed the April feed you can surprise yourself and your neighbors with another fert in the first week of December (weather permitting). Watch what happens in late March with the turf!!
Mowing height is a bit tricky at times. Since you are not selling tee times for your lawn do not cut as short or daily. Set your mower for a three inch level of cut throughout the growing season. The day before you treat with the fert and seed set the mower to 2 1/2" for a cut. Return it to the 3" for the rest.
I tell you these heights because it also reduces weeds in your turf (not eliminate, but reduces!) This height will also promote deeper root development and reduce the insect and possible fungi development. If you want a Golf Course type of turf be prepared to cut daily and spray daily.
In general cut the turf every seven days a minimum. You may find that you will have to move the schedule to four or five days with the addition of the fert, seed, and rainfall. Before you do the final cut in late october set the mower to the 2"level (after removing all the leaves). This will prevent the winter molds from forming. You still do the Dec. feeding over this.
