What are the major differences between Thuja Green Giant and Thuja Fastigiata?
Question:Is the growth rate similar? Are they both very dense? What about the spread? Thanks!

Thuja Green Giant has a fast growth rate (unlike the plicata species as Glenn has pointed out), especially under nursery conditions.They can reach 40' high and 20' wide. Green Giant will not maintain its green color in cold climates. It turns a bronze/green in winter. It will green up as it warms. Fine, dense texture. Thuja Fastigiata is a slower grower (moderate rate) but truly can be a giant. This arborvitae can grow to over 150' tall. There appears to be a lot of variability in its reported size in the urban garden. Expect it to grow to 30-70' with only a 15-20' spread. It will be narrower than the Green Giant at the same height. This arborvitae also discolors in winter.

the major difference is that 'Fastiagata' will be taller and skinnier. it is columnar with a straight, slender outline and dense, rich green foliage. growth rates are similar-slow to medium. both are dense. 'Green Giant' will have a wider spread.
