How do I revive a scorched lawn?

Question:It's been a hot spring w/ very little rain... We live in a rental unit & our lawn has a large portion which is weeds instead of grass anyway, but the parts that are actually grass are scorched and browning... Is there any way to revive the lawn w/out spending a lot of $$$?

Fertilizing is the worst thing you can do for the lawn in that state of condition. The lawn has "shut down" and is suffering from drought stress. Putting fertilizer down and "forcing" it to grow, is a no no at this time, it will only add to the stress already shown. The shutting down by the grass is its way of preserving what little moisture is left. By shutting down, it will not have to find a water source that is no longer available. Providing you still have grass blades visible, and assuming it is just really browned out, all it needs, is to be "soaked" real good in order for it to come out of dormancy. And when I say soaked, I "mean" soaked everyday, for about a week and a half straight. Water early in the morning say, around 7 o'clock or before if possible, this is the best time, not at nite like so many other misinformed people will tell you. You don't want to water at night or early evening, for this will make the lawn susceptible to diseases. You want the lawn to be "dry" when nite time rolls around. Turf diseases thrive on moist, cool, humid conditions, just what you will give them if you water at nite. So, water the heck out of it everyday for about a week and a half, and you should see it start to green up a little and begin to grow. Once it gets greened up, then it will be ok go put down some fertilizer. Once it greens up and you see it actively starting to grow, you can try and get on a normal watering schedule depending on the temperatures in your area. Hope this answers your question...

Ariate the area using the garden fork every 6 inches water well. If you live in an area with not water shortage the put the sprinkler on each evening for as long as possible
You could sprinkle on some more grass seed as well.
try watering it a little each day and when you mow it again raise your blade a little. i have the same problem what i did was get some cheap potting soil from walmart about 2dollars a bag and put it on bare spots keep it watered not over watered and a little patience mine is slowly getting there.

good luck
