Too late to move this lily and plant it somewhere else?

Question:I have a lily(one of the fragrant ones) that's planted with some borage but the borage plants have gotten too big and crowding the lily. There are two flower buds already, so is it going to kill the lily if I move it some where else?

Answers:
It should be fine to move it just try to take as much of the soil with it that you can. Lilies don't run that deep and if you can pick up the lily soil and all then it won't even know it's been moved. Have a hole ready in it's new home then shove the shovel in deep enough to lift the lily and surrounding soil at once. Carry it on the shovel to the new hole and gently place it in. Helps if the soil is a bit damp. I've done this to many variety of plants that I did not want to disturb and I haven't had any problems.
Lilies are very forgiving as well.
Good Luck

It won't kill it, but it may not bloom this year.
Is it a daylily, Asian lily, or Oriental Lily? My guess is that you are asking about a daylily. It isn't going to do it any good to move it now but I move mine around all season. Pick a cool overcast day if possible and take as much soil as possible, water well for a couple weeks. You might even get blooms if you planted it bare rooted but would be slower to take hold. You will know if it is a day lily if the blossoms only last one day. I wouldn't move the other type now... wait until fall.
If you don't mind losing a few of the borage plants I'd dig a wide swath and deep enough to get as much undisturbed roots as you can-then pull away the borage and transplant your lily--keep it moist and keep it shaded for a couple days to prevent shock. I've transplanted several day lilies and tuberoses and never had any problems with them. But if the borage roots continue to crowd the lily's roots you may have a problem with the lily getting the nourishment it needs. Good luck with your dilemma
