How can I stop birds from nesting on my roof? I have many, many sparrows. I live in Southern California.?
Question:I have a red tile roof, and somehow the sparrows get into each tile, even though each tile is filled with cement. The birds are are nuisance, because of their droppings all over the front steps, and driveway.

This site has many, many bird deterrents. Go to the section on Bird Deterrents. There are two listed: a sonic and an ultrasonic. I feel one of these two might be helpful because you can't use netting or the weird scarecrow or the sticky bird deterrents.

Around here I see a lot of places have a big fake owl attached on or near the roof. I don't know how effective it is.

climb up into your roofspace, set up the biggest sound system you can find, put on avril lavigne's latest offering and i gurantee they'll hurl themselves to a welcome death within minutes.
unless you have really terrible luck and it turns out they're whiny teenage birds. then they'll actualy LIKE the music. then i'm afraid you'll have to kill them.
go to lowes or home depot and buy one of those life sized plastic owls. Mount it on a pole so that it moves back and forth in the wind and "keeps watch" over the areas of the roof the sparrows are using. you may have to mount two in order to cover the roof area. they will leave for quieter areas.
the fake owls work well that the other person suggested, get several.
Actually the fake owls are not all that effective. After a short while the birds learn that they are fake and will actually perch on them. You need to plug every opening so that the birds do not have any opportunity to build a nest. You cannot kill or harm the birds as even songbirds are protected.
