Can vegetables be grown in planter boxes? What size should the boxes be for tomatoes, peppers, & onions?

Question:

Answers:
Any vegetables can be grown in containers, some work better than others. Tomatoes should have a five gallon size pot for one plant. Some things like corn, for example, could be grown, buy tying up a pot to grow a single corn plant is kind of silly.

yes, a min. size of 3 gallon capacity container
I've grown tomatos in a ten inch pot inside. It grew for a couple years and had fruit. Just had to pollenate it by hand. Imagine the same could be done for peppers. Onion box size depends on how many you want.
they make containers that reuse the overflow water for feeding so the soil isnt wet, the soil isnt too dry. if you are growing onion you need your box to be deep. peppers and tomatoes need to be adequately spaced, use your best judgment.
buts hate:
lavender oil
drier sheets in the pockets
clove oil
Oh, yes you can. I heard that the using a galvanized metal garbage can is good, because it collect lots of heat. Just make sure you make lots of drainage holes at the bottom.
Tomatoes and peppers grow a big root system, so get a pot as large as you can handle.I'd say minum 5 gallon, 10-15 would be better. Also be careful what type tomato you get. Look for those specific for pot culture...they may have the term "patio" in the name. I highly suggest determinate type tomatoes, those that grow to a certain size and stop. The indeterminate keep growing...and growing...and growing. Many, not all, but many of the salad tomatoes are indeterminate.

Peppers can get to 3 or so feet high, but not in a pot. I've had better luck growing small hot peppers in containers than sweet peppers, but then our climate is hot and dry, hard for containers.

Neat idea about onions in containers....that will be different. Also try herbs, lettuces, green beans (bush type).
Lettuce and green tail onions grow well in planter boxes. Depending on what size tomatoes you plant. The small cherry tomatoes do well in small pots. The big boy need a very large pot. Pepper plants will grow in a 14 inch pot.
