Is it true that Epson salt helps some plants grow?
Question:Co-worker says to put some down by the roots of our pepper and tomatoe plants, and that will help them grow once they have buds.
Answers:
Yes, but it's mainly to keep them from getting a virus, it's called - leaf wilt - or - as most people around here call it - blight!
Blight - is where the leaves of your tomato plants start to get black spots on them and the plant dies, Epson salts is used to prevent this from happening, and some cases where the plant has mild cases of blight.

This is magnesium which will in fact induce those plants to produce blossoms, and then fruit. Sometimes, pepper plants abort flowers for various reasons, and putting a teaspoon in a quart or a litre of warm water and spraying the leaves with a clean spray bottle, to drench the plant thoroughly, including under the leaves, and watering with the rest of that water, will help the flowers resist aborting, and cause the plant to produce more flowers and fruit. Good luck.
Response to SRMAINMAN: I did not know that one. Thanks. You learn something new every day. Some people soak their feet in epsom salts and water, then water their plants with that water, so that they will grow an extra foot...
Steviewag is right-on with his info. One addition, the use of magnesium (epsom salts) will also help prevent blossom-end rot (where ripe fruits start rotting from the bottom up. I always sprinkle a heaping teaspoon in the bottom of the hole before I transplant.
i mix two tablespoons of epson salt, one teaspoon baby shampoo with one gallon of water. my tomatoes love it, plus you will get double the tomatoes. epson salt will have directions on the back of the package on how to use for all kinds of plants, trees, shrubs, and yards.
Hi, when you are planting your tomatoes, put a handful of Epsom Salt into the hole first. Than plant your Tomatoes, and water well. I threw some(a whole bag full) out into the front yard, and into the flower beds and now my lawn looks like a lawn in House and Garden Magazine! The flowers popped out like someone hit them with some kind of Magic Wand! It's amazing! You should try it,but don't forget to water in well after!
Sounds like everyone that has got this topic covered. I too have used Epsom salts and had fabulous results.
