What are these beetles in my neighbor's yard and how can he get rid of them??
Question:We live in upstate NY and my neighbor's yard is INFESTED with these little flying beetles. They might be a june bug, dark brown-black but I am not sure. But when you look at his yard they are EVERYWHERE...reminds me of fleas jumping on a dog's back.
No one else's yard has them..just his. Why are they there (are they living on something in his yard?) and how can he get rid of them?
Thanks!

Forget the beetle bags. I have tried them, and they DO attract the beetles, even if they are properly placed. I live in the Northeastern area of Pa, so I too am affected by the little critters. I try to knock as many beetles off (whatever they are munching on) with my hand, or pick them off, then drop them into a can or pail of soapy water. If the infestation is bad, then I resort to spraying. I use a liquid spray (Sevin) or something that specifies for the use of Japanese beetles. It sounds gross, physically removing them, however, that is the only way to remove them if you do not want to use a pesticide. You could spray them with a hose, but they will return and continue to ravish everything. The times between 10am and 2pm, are when they are most active. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, and they are really a nuisance. Good Luck! ------EDIT Well, "TODAY" I am in the same boat. The beetles have arrived! Yesterday, after posting to your question, I went outside and not a beetle to be found. I guess it is my turn to follow my own advice! Happy Gardening!
They're probably not beetles, ya see, this time of year, ants begin to swarm, and them come out by the thousands in a swarm, queen ants looking for new homes!
You can use diazonon at your local ace-hardware store to kill them, it comes in granular form!
They might actually be Japanese beetles. They are attracted to roses but will eat any leaf. There is a product at ACE Hardware, its a bag that they are attracted to. They fly into this bag and can't get out. Its gross but it works. Good luck!
They sound like June bugs to me. Also can be beetles. Tell your neighbor to buy some Sevin Dust and sprinkle all over his yard.
This is the time of year for Japanese beetles, and it sounds like that's what you got. Check our your local hardware store's lawn and garden section. You should be able to find a chemical that kills them, along with fleas, ticks, and other pests.
Good luck!
I would have to say your neighbor has either Japanese Beetles or June Bugs. Seeing as you live in NY I'm leaning more toward June bugs, still a bit early for the Japanese beetles up there. Tell him he can either call a local landscaping company and they can come spray or go to a local hardware store (lowe's, home depot etc) and buy a Bag-A-Bug kit. It is a bag with bait that you hang and the beetles and june bugs are attracted to it. HOWEVER, it does attract them so more are likely to come and find it. We have our Japanese cherry tree, crepe myrtles, lorapetalum and holly bushes sprayed every year and it costs about $35. That is 1 tree and 14 bushes worth, so his may be more or less.
Try malathion.
This is the time for Jap Beetles, Use an insecticide called Thiodane it will kill every Jap Beetle, Potato Bug etc: Just try I guarantee results immediately.
