Can anyone tell me why snails come out in the rain and come down the path to my front door.?

Question:

Answers:
It's infinitely easier for snails to move along a moist surface than a dry surface. The reason they come down the path to the front door is because that's the most traveled human path, which means slightly more protein has been deposited on the walkway making it slipperier, which the snails like.

They want to come in!

Did you know a snail mates for as long as 24 hrs?
Now you do..

Guys take note..

I'd last a couple of days; but then the ironing would never get down..
snails can only live in damp weather usually, or they would dry out and die. I have just been watching them out of the window. They are quite cute..
i don't know but it sometimes it quite sweet to open the front door and see several of them trying to come in! i'm quite touched by it!
They want to come in they're getting wet.
I love Hosta's and so do they! I gather them up in a bucket and take them up the road for walkies. I hope they like their new home in the woods, better than being squished!
snails and every other insect and animal have been on this planet for far far longer than humans and have instincts far greater than ours i.e. many animals and birds can detect earthquakes long before they happen. i would suggest that before your home was built the local snail population headed in the direction of your home when it rained to find a partner for mating or an area where your home now is used to be a good source of food during rainfall
As snails often seal up their shells with slime which hardens into a parchment-like cap, when it rains this softens so they can move about in search of food.
i find a lot of silver snail trails up the side of the house. They go right up to the eaves. We usually leave the back door open for the dogs to come in and out and on occasions when closing it at night I have heard the awful crunch as those settled in the door jam get squashed. Horrible.
ps. they appear on rainy nights to eat the bird food on the patio. In the morning you can see all the silvery trails of their busy forage.
Snails graze on the small algae that grows on stone pathways, wet weather enables this. This is common behavior for molluscs (to include slugs) and occurs in my garden regularly, where I have NEVER found a snail on a plant, ever !
i always take advantage of this situation and kill as many as possible
