What do you do with early blooming chrysanthemum flowers?
Question:
Answers:
I have several chrysanthemums in my yard. I was told by gardeners to always pinch all the ends off until the (middle of July) to keep them from blooming too early and not having pretty flowers. These we call Mums in the South--- They are very pretty and full if pinched until the middle of July and then keep watered well and let them go for flowering in the Fall. They are Fall flowers--but will bloom too early if not pinched back . I have used this method for years and it always works to make beautiful flowers in the Fall season. Enjoy these -they should bloom until frost if kept watered and dead headed.
I cut their little heads off. That way, the blooms come back bigger. This was told to me by someone and although I hated to try it, I found that it worked. Since they are supposed to bloom in the autumn, I would suggest you try it. Your plant will get very wide and create gorgeous flowers later on.
Pinch the flowers off. This will encourage the plant to grow bushier, and produce better flowers in the late summer/fall. Pinch until about last of July.
Chrysanthemums may bloom early due to cooler, wetter weather than normal; they think it's fall. If you cut the plants down to about 6 inches high, they will "bush out" and be more attractive in the fall. Interestingly, when you buy the pretty bushy chrysanthemums, they are rounded and bushy because they have been sprayed with a type of growth hormone. They become more spindly when the hormone wears off.
