You can trim it...however do NOT cut anything bigger around than a pencil for the tree/bush to grow properly.
well.. you can give it time.. trees will grow taller.. and more bushy in time.
you might consider feeding it (fertilizer).
If you cut the top a bit, the tree will bush out more.
Hello! I would need to know what type tree we are discussing here. If it is an evergreen, right about now, the new growth is coming on. Just pluck as many of those off as you can reach. That way, the tree will send energy into the old growth instead of the new growth. If not an evergreen tree, I would need to know what kind of tree it is before I could advise you as to how to make it bushier and taller. What I do with a Russian Olive tree to make it bushier and taller would kill a Maple tree. So, I can help more if I know what kind of tree it is.
Generally, trees will grow bushier and taller when they are in good soil and have plenty of water.

Choose the final shape you want it to be.
Remove all spindly growth and unwanted branches below a chosen height. Prune all weak growth, branches that cross over other main branches and such.
Your own eyes will tell you which inner growth to remove. Now is a good time to do fairly heavy pruning.
