Growing brocoli in the Northwest?
Question:This is my 3rd year trying to grow Brocoli in Oregon. I was excited that it was growing well until the last few days the crowns have started to flower? What does this mean? What did I do wrong? Has it gone to seed and not able to eat it now?
Thanks
Answers:
Yes, it has matured too much, you waited too long to harvest it. If it hasn't flowered too much, it will still be good, try it. If it tastes good, it is ok. Just cut the top off and let the other little sprouts grow and cut them off and eat them too. Most people don't know that the plant keeps producing heads that you can eat too. as long as the plant hasn't completely gone to seed, you can keep harvesting little heads off of it.
From now on, keep constant watch on your broccoli and cut the head off before it flowers.
For aphid control, use safers soap. For control of little green worms, use bacillus thuringensis, both are natural and organic and won't hurt good bugs or you.
I gardened all over the state of Oregon. Where are you gardening?
In Oregon, you can plant more broccoli right up to September and still harvest it. Plant more! Make sure it stays well watered.
I am so jealous! I wish I could garden now! I am driving truck all over the USA and all I have is two red bell pepper plants and a tomato plant on my dashboard and a prayer plant and an African violet and some purple, red and white petunias.
