How should I replace my grass?

Question:My lawn is mostly weeds and hardly any grass. I have a 1/2 acre and am unsure how I can go about replacing it or what I have to do to get nice green grass. I have dead spots, mossy spots and grassy/weedy spots.

I guess my big dilemma is that the grassy parts are filled with small leafy things, or grass that is sporadic in places and doesn't have a nice full plushy feeling of what I think of grass.

What to I need to do this to remedy this?

Lawn renovation would be in order. Here's a link:

I did this last year, and it worked wonders. The best time to do this is at the end of the summer, as temps are just starting to cool off. You're seed will have a higher germination rate, and won't be killed off by hot weather, or choked out by active weeds.

Start preparing now by getting a soil test done and adding lime and other ammendments if necessary. Then, kill everything off and reseed. It's going to be very important to keep the new seed just a little damp for the first couple weeks. 5-10 minutes with a light sprinkler two or three times a day would be perfect.

It will take a little bit of time and work (but not too much) and will be about 70-80% cheaper than having someone put sod in for you.

Good luck!

yes i think you should remove your "lawn" and start over again. maybe invest in a rotter tiller which will mix up everything together small leafy things could be good mixed with soil, makes for great compost. thats if you want to go the route of planting new grass from seed...another choice you have is to buy sod and laying that down in your back yard which will provide the lush plushy feeling your looking for without the wait.an instant lawn if you will..good luck
Unless you have A LOT of free time, you're going to need a professional. You wil need a lot of topsoil and grass seed or a lot of sod. The best thing for you to do, regardless of whether or not you do it yourself, is check out www.1-800-TOPSOIL or call 1-800-TOPSOIL to see if they have a member who services your area. I've used these guys in two states, and I'm becoming a fan. If they have someone local, they can tell you exactly what you need to do and how to do it, and they very often deliver. It appears that you have quite the project ahead of you. Good luck!
