if you have no plants or fish, use chlorine and algaecide.
if you have plants or fish, keep the filter clean, use a net to scoop debris off bottom, and ask your nearby pond store for a product that makes suspended debris fall to the bottom. (I forget the name of it)
To get rid of algae in a pond with fish, add floating plants. they will take the nutrients from the water and the algae will starve.
this is what I have done to my pond. I have a double filter system and a UV light that the water runs through before reaching the filter and water returning to the pond. If possible you might try putting up a picnic canopy over your pond, to much sun light helps the algae to grow. I have fish, snails, algae eaters and some plants in my pond. I do get a little bit of algae but it soon goes away and with all the critters I have in my pond the water is kept clean. A good filter system is a definite must have. I have my filter being one that sits outside the pond, it's a bio-filter. I have used many chemicals but they didn't do anything to help with the algae. I have found all that I have done has been by trial and error. Hope this helps.
