Just alittle advise. I too wanted to try to do this for the environment. I purchased the push mower that our local Lowes had. The first one that we got well it was broken right out of the box. Seems like it had too many plastic parts and we noticed several pieces broken when we removed it from its box. Back to the store to get a replacement. This one the same model worked well on our yard after we cut the grass with the motor mower once to get it to the short level the push mower required. Well after the strenous workout to get the grass cut we thought we had made a fair decision. The second time we started using the push mower it just stopped working. It appeared that the chain the turns the blades had slipped. There was no way to get into the wheel covering to fix this problem. The store said that they would have to send it off for repair. We would have to pay for the shipping. I was so discouraged that this was the case I just got my money back. I think if you could find one of the older push mowers like our parents and grandparents used then it would most likely have metal parts and be more simple to repair yourself. This is just my opinion and I am looking for an older model myself. Until then I will be let using the standard motor mower.
Just look at whatever model you decide on and see if you will be able to fix it if needed and look for few plastic parts.
Good Luck and I am glad to see that others are concerned about our environment as well.

Surprisingly, these things cost more than the self-propelled mowers with engines.
I do, I do!!
But we live in NC.
Gosh, I think we have two of them.
One high rear wheel, and a regular push one.
Second hand shop, Garage Sales, Antique shops,
Flea Market.
Contact the American Lawnmower Company and ask for a dealer in California...
Good mowing!!
I remember seeing them in Home Depot a few years ago. Try there. They can get them in if they don't have them in stock. Or an estate sale, you may luck up.
Try this:

or simply find it at ebay.com :)
Its much more easier.
They are hidden, but can be found at Lowe's and Home Depot even here in California. American Mower makes most of the brands under many different labels.
I bought one, but after just one hot & tedious attempt, sold it at my next garage sale and hired a fantastic neighbor for $25 a trip including mowing and trim.
Sears has a blade sharpening service...just in case you actually do this.
The name is "reel" lawnmower. I checked Home Depot and they have 2 one made by Scotts and the other Great States. You can also checked ebay, sears, OSH, etc.
Go to www.homedepot.com & type in reel lawmower to see the 2 reel lawmowers and price.
Good Luck.
flea market, flea market, flea market.
unless you have cash you really don't like carrying around.
also, an old one will, at this point, probably be better made.
you can probably get it sharpened, which will cost more than buying it, but it'll be good forever.
the one we had had a "self sharpener" as it turned.
if it's real rusty, specifically on the cutting edges, it'll need some help.
most of the rest doesn't matter.
you might want to put some oil or grease in the gears every decade or so.
other than that, only the elbow kind is all it needs.
This is called a "reel" mower. We bought one from Lowe's; Home Depot also has them. Ours was $120. They do have some limitations, such as they don't cut grass as short as gas/electric mowers, and your grass cannot be over 6" tall. They are not difficult to push. They are not loud. This is an excellent environmental choice!
I have recently been doing alot of looking in to the Reel mowers.Look up the Scotts Classic Reel mower. Its is probably the best value. Good job you are helping the environment, your lawn and your health.
