If i am adding 100mm of topsoil to garden can i turf over old lawn?

Question:i would like to leave the old lawn down, put 100mm 4" of top soil over it and returf. will the old lawn grow through or affect the new lawn

Answers:
I would apply a weed killer to your existing lawn and then topsoil a week afterwards. Put down your new grass and seed and water it in. the existing grass will grow up through the topsoil and help to hold the topsoil as well as thicken your new lawn. If you are goig to sod I would rent a sod cutter and remove the old grass first. This will help root development for the sod. Have you considered aerating and overseeding. If you have some grass you want to keep this is a good option for the fall.

Kill the old lawn first, with an herbicide , if you want to be sure . The new soil isn't sterile , so probably doesn't matter if there are weeds in the old lawn, & you leave it alive .
Did it last year.

Unless you are laying top quality bowling green finish grass on your new lawn you have no worries.

All we did was took out all the "big" weeds and moss before covering. No sign of anything growing through.

Best of Luck
