Can I plant herbs along with flowers?
Question:I am a first time gardener. I decided that I want a flower garden in front of my house. I was just wondering if and what kind of herbs I can plant with my flowers.

You can also mix in some edible pretty flowers and herbs. Lavender in pretty and smells great. Nasturium has pretty flowers and interesting leaves and is completely edible. I love the pretty colors in a salad.
Some other wonderful herbs to try: Tyme, Sage, Salad Burnet (it tastes like cucumbers), parsley, red or purple basil Beautiful colors but it's hard to start from seed), Marjoram and rosemary.

As long as your garden is pretty sunny, you can plant just about any herb. The green will look lovely with your flowers. Basil, thyme and rosemary will all get kind of bushy and fill in nicely. Things like mint and catnip. you want to keep in containers because it can be very invasive. Chives are great as is sage. Just be sure to water regularly and pinch back the flowers to encourage more green growth. If the flowers go to seed, the plant will stop growing foliage.

I know what you consider an herb, but did you know that the definition of an herb is "A plant whose stem does not produce woody, persistent tissue and generally dies back at the end of each growing season. " This includes both perennials and annuals. Also, did you know that many, many plants you think of as just "flowers", are good for food or for medicinal uses - these include what most people consider weeds. You need to be careful, though, because there are also those innocent-looking plants that are poisonous.
