What attracts snails to your yard? I have an overwhelming amount of them so SOMETHING is attracting them.?
Question:I don't really have the money to get a bunch of snail bait, for the amount that I have.. So, if anyone can tell me what the composition is that attracts them, then maybe I can change that. Weather its a certain type of grass, or flower, or even mold.. Anyone?
Answers:
Firstly, DO NOT, scatter rock salt, it does more harm than good. Snails enjoy areas that are not disturbed (dug/raked/tilled with DRY areas for resting. Snails HATE wet resting places. especially overwinter when freezing conditions occur. They thrive on alkaline soils (chalk or lime content) and graze on decayed leaf/plant/algae and rotting vegetation, including old dogs mess ! Fences, slates, boards, evergreen shrubs, planking, and dry walls are some of their favourite haunts. Gardens that have not been dosed with insect poisons also have more snails.
cover your lawn in rock salt it will kill them
TOO MUCH MOISTURE - and your yard is most likely shady
snails or slugs, either way they LOVE dampness, moisture. Usually come out with big rains. Are you watering too much, a lot of shaded areas, marshy by you. A cheap way to get rid of them is go to a pool store. They have this sand, its real cheap & you get tons of it, huge bag. It is very sharp to them & will just cut them all up, they die, others dont return. But moisture is your problem. Only you will know how to fix that.
They like beer. Did you leave beer in your garden? You can put beer in little dishes and get them drunk and then they die. And who says gardening isn't fun.
get several lids fill with beer they will get rid of your snail problem
listen. all the stuff that these people use is very ineffective! go to walmart and in the garden center there is a product called "snail and slug bait II" it's in a red box and it's under $4. ask the clerk if u can't find it! now take this stuff home and sprinkle it around ur yard but not near any of ur plants... and trust me... it don't matter how many snails and slugs u have...this stuff will "GREATLY" reduce there numbers, and it lasts a long time too! after an application or two the pests will be almost completely destroyed! this stuff not only attracts the things it kills them almost on contact... so don't be scared when u go out the next morning and u have a million dead slugs where u applied it!
Robert,,,Chemicals is not the solution!
Ed Snow has hit this one right on the head!
The least pesticides/herbicides you use the healthier your garden will be.
I am a certified Pesticide Applicator and I only spray/add chemicals when it is absolutely necessary.
Clean up debris from yard.especially Old boards, dog Fecal matter, dead leave piles( a good compost pile is too HOT for Sails)..also they will hide out under pots and patio furniture during the day...
Good Luck!
