My ZZ plant is growing to big. What can I do?
Question:I've always been told that the ZZ plant grows slowly but mine is over 4 feet high now and getting hard to manage (it tips over). Can I cut it down? (It's not showing any signs of growing slower)
Answers:
ZZ Top (it).
Transplant it into a bigger pot.
transplant to another place, or you can cut it to a small plant.
Yes, you can cut your ZZ plant back considerably and it should be fine. New growth should start appearing soon. Be sure to reduce your watering after cutting it back, as it will need much less and they are sensitive to overwatering. As an alternative, a larger pot will keep your plant from tipping over if you don't mind the size.
ZZ plants can grow to over 6 feet tall. You should should probably repot ther plant, trimming back some of the roots when you do so. They also grow in spurts, most of the time they are slow growing, but during the spurts they can grow really fast.
If you decide to prune it, or cut it back, make sure that it has started some new growth. The plant propogates by its tuber-roots, or occassionally by dropping leaves that will take root in the soil (the leaf will die, but it grows a new tuber from which a plant will grow, and this process can take up to a year).
Also, when repotting , use a cactus soil mix, as they are similar to cactii in their growth habits and nutrient needs.
Good luck.
