Growing watermelon/cucumbers in confined spaces?

Question:I am growing two watermelon and one cucumber plant at my rental home. I tried planting them in the backyard last year, but the bamboo roots back there made it impossible to grow anything. So, I decided to plant them in three one gallon milk jugs.

But, anyways, to make a long story short, I need to be able to grow them in an area as small as possible. Do you have any tips on how I can go about doing this? I've grown cucumbers before, but have never tried doing it in a confined space.

Also, it would be great if I could move them if needed, but not necessary. Let me know what you think.

Answers:
You can plant them in regular plant pots, at least 12" in diameter - I would go even bigger than that. Use a tomato cage/support type of thing so that you can "train" the vines to grow up instead of sprawling out. I've done this before and it works pretty well. Water them and have tthem in the sun just as you would if they were outside.

The watermelons may be harder to do this way because the fruit get pretty heavy. If you could find a planter that's long instead of tall, that may be the trick that will make it work.

By using planters, you can still move them (as long as they don't get too heavy).
