Year-round plants on a high rise balcony?

Question:I live in a high rise in a big city that has 4 seasons (i.e. hot summers & cold winters). Are there any evergreen plants that I can keep outside on my balcony all year-round? Any other advice on making my balcony more "green" & beautiful is welcome, too. The balcony faces South East and gets some morning sunlight. THANKS!

Answers:
think in terms of very large containers for trees/shrubs like this. the large container is needed to help insulate the root mass of the plant. Large containers also manage moisture better and allow the plant a better chance to stand up to winds, etc. that you will have in such a circumstance.

You might do a web search on "rooftop gardening" for some specifics as far as plants and trees for your particular area.

Good luck!

HUM... the problem is not going to be choosing perennials, but caring for potted plants in extreme temperatures. You may have to bring them in, in the winter.

Even the hardiest evergreen can be damaged in a pot, by extreme temperatures. But in the same area, it can cope very well planted on the ground
