I am growing pumpkins?
Question:I fertilized the plants with miracle grow garden soil. I gave them about three hand full each. A couple days later another pumpkin sprouted. I never gave it fertilize. A couple weeks later, the fertilized pumpkins had HUGE leafs, but they were a lime green. The unfertilized pumpkin had small leafs, but they are a dark green. Last year, i had a pumpkin sprout up and i gave it alot of fertilize. It also had huge leafs, but i didnt have a single pumpkin. Question 1: Is this year going to be the same with the fertilized pumpkins. Question 2: Am i doing anything wrong with fertilizing the pumpkins.
Answers:
Ok Here is how I do this. First off Don't just toss the Miracle grow on the plants that is a no-no. That is way way to much.
Take a gallon jug full of water. and add 1/4 teaspoon of the Miracle grow to it. That is ALL that is needed. Over fertilizing will cause the problems you have, it causes them to grow to rapidly when you use to much, and the focus for the plant is on the leaves. Not the veggies/ etc.
I have pumpkins, squash , tomatoes, peppers, beans and spices growing. Each day I water. One day, plain water, the next with Miracle grow. and I alternate. My Tomatoes are growing beautifully, and will produce about 20 tomatoes each. The cherry tomatoes will have 50-70 each. The squash plants usually put out 4-5 each and the pumpkins about the same. I've done it this way ever since a gardner friend taught me to do it this way. Never had a bad season.
Give this a try. And give the plants a rest for about a week only using water. to let some of the over use work it's way through.
Good Luck!
Fertilizing is a good thing, in moderation. I think you're fertilizing to much. To much fertilizer will cause the leaves to turn lighter or even yellow. Try using Miracle Grow...the kind that hooks up to your hose.
