How do i attract cardinals to my yard. how do you put seed out for them?

Question:

Answers:
We put out safflower blocks in cages for our Cardinals and they love it! As an added bonus, there are no shells to make a mess on the ground and squirrels will leave it alone. Our local stores that carry safflower blocks are Tractor Supply Company and Ace Hardware (they both also carry the cages).

This is the kind of block we buy, it's the second one from the top.

This tells a little about safflower seeds and why people like to use them:

they sell bird seed especially for cardinals any feed store or nursery will have it
I get songbird food at Walmart and they seem to love it. We get about 15 a day. But I live in IL and that is our state bird so maybe we just have more.
In a feeder. They like thistle. Maybe you'll be lucky and have a pair frequent your feeder.
We live in Upstate NY and our Cardinals (And blue Jays) seem to love the mixed seed with fruits and sunflowers in it.
also the hearty mixed seeds with many varietys.
Black oil sunflower seeds are a favorite. Scatter on ground or put in feeders. On ground will attract more birds. Any sunflower seed will do. Seed on ground should be in open area to keep feeding birds from becoming prey to cats.
They like sunflower seeds and pine nuts. I put them in a squirrel proof feeder. During the summer when there are plenty of bugs around they may prefer the bugs. I see mine mostly in the winter. When the babies are flying the parents will actually take them to my feeder. But they prefer bugs when still in the nest.
Safflower seeds. Cardinals love them and they will not attract less desirable birds like starlings and grackles.

I have an old, small carpenter's bench that I put my seed on. It works great and can be washed off easily. I have it in the yard so I can just mow down any seeds that germinate.
Nancy B does it the way I do. I don't feed the birds in warm weather. There is PLENTY for them to eat. I start at the first big snowfall. I get 3 pairs every day. One thing I've noticed is that they are in my yard the earliest of any bird, and I don't see them again 'til dusk. I only feed oil sunflower seeds, and the cheapest bird seed I can buy. I get hundreds of birds all day long on that combination. Oops, I forgot. I also have a thistle feeder for the finches, and suet.
My cardinals (I counted 5 males and many females and juveniles this week) love black oil sunflower seed. I put up a post (I stuck a landscaping timber in Quik-Crete) and put 2 hanging birdfeeders on it, one mesh-type and one tray-type. Then I had to put a squirrel baffle on it. Having a water source will also attract them; if you use a birdbath, keep the water in it clean and fresh.
cardinals love black sunflower seeds. put them where they will stay dry
