First did you check the choke to make sure that you weren't on the wrong setting.. Make sure it has enough oil.. Then comes the diagnostic...
pretty much everyone had useful suggestions.. to put them all together.. An engine basically needs three things Air, Fuel, and ignition.. As other said start with the easy stuff, clean out the air filter, make sure that after you drained the gas that there is no water in the tank.. Sometimes that last little bit is left in.., then pull the spark plug and see if it looks like it has black crusties on it.. IT should look smooth and brown or possibly slightly blackened.. If it has goo or chunks clean between the metal end and the little metal thing that is bent over it (these are the two parts of the electrode which cause the spark). You can clean it with a piece of fine sand paper.. WD 40 helps but it has to be dry when you put it back in. You can test the spark by unscrewing it, leaving the wire in and touching it to the block while a friend SLOWLY pulls the rope or turns the key.. WARNING.. if you ground yourself to the block during the test, it will shock you and it is not pleasant. To improve the spark for a short time you can use a pencil and essentially color around on the stub of the electrode.. The graphite helps the spark.
With all of that done, if she still refuses to start then is is probably the carb.. First thing is to ask yourself how old was the gas that was in it.? if it sat all winter and you don't use fuel stabilizer then it is most likely gunked up.. First drain the bowl in the bottom of the carb it is usually on the bottom with a screw holding it to the carb.. All the resident gas sits there.. Empty it.. If the bowl has what looks like a shiny brownish coating then the gas has begun breaking down and has gunked up the carb.. Now without the air filter, use a can of spray carb cleaner in the throat.. Try doing that and waiting about 5 mins between dousings.. do it about 3 or 4 times.. Put it all back together and see if she will start. If not the last ditch effort is to flood the thing with the carb cleaner and let it sit over night. Drain it all out and try to start her... If this has not worked, take it to a repair man or start the carb rebuild or buy a new one.. BUT since you got it to sputter for a few seconds one of these steps should fix it without the additional expense.
replace th spark plug
yep willjclinton is right
change your air cleaner, clean or replace your sparkplug.
ROB is correct if that does not work you might have to clean or re-build carb.
clean the carb. check the head to make sure you didn't snap a head bolt put good gas in it clean the spark plug but just before you go to start the engine put a torch to the plug and heat that up and it should start if it don't get a new lawn mower...
Not sure if this would be the problem but one time my push mower wouldn't start. . .It would want to but wouldn't. I had to tighten the nut holding the blade to the mower deck. Make sure that is tight and see if it will start. . .mine did. Hope that works for ya.
You say the primer gurgles? Your carb isn't working then! It will need to be rebuilt or replaced. You should get a positive gas flow into the carb throat with each prime.
You know, it sound like it could be as simple as your primer bulb is cracked. If it is, it could be sucking air, which would explain the sporatic behavior. I had it happen to me once. But start there, you can get a replacement primer bulb for a few bucks at your local auto parts store. Also make sure your air filter is clean. A plugged air filter could cause this behavior also. Start cheap before spending too much having the carb rebuilt, just to find out that's not the problem. Hope this helps.
Um i have a simlar prob. lol . my husband gets it going every time. If its on a hill it want start, or it does for a second. I lift back , basically lifting it a little and then pull the string. and one time i changed the gas out.
Probably needs a carb cleaning.
Don't use starting fluid. It can blow a hole through the piston head. Use a couple drops of gas instead.
