How easy is it to grow your own fruit and veg?

Question:I take you only need some soil, seeds to get started, then you just water them?

Answers:
It is easy if the pests like slugs and snails don't get there first. Apart from the items you have already said you will need to buy some fertiliser, this can be in liquid form, and is much easier when you are first starting.

You can grow vegetables in a garden, or pots on the patio, or even a window box if you don't have a garden. It is most satisfying to go and pick your own vegetables. Just do what it says on the packet, water, feed, and you are well away.

Even my 11yr old son grows his own vegetables. Last year he grew sweetcorn. This year he has grown broad beens.

Go for it.

Its sounds easy but there are a lot of pitfalls..you can get a lot of help from people more knowlegable than me. What I wanted to say is that you cannot beat your own fresh veg. You will soon rrealise the taste and freshness is vastly superior to anything you can buy in the supermarket.

If you could afford a small greenhouse then you could grow your own tomatoes.
Maybe you could construct a leanto greenhouse??
always read what it says on the pkts don't over water them you will rot them pick out the strongest plants and sow on if they are tall use a stake basically commonsense read the packet
I love the idea of growing my own food but all my attempts end in disaster. Slugs and caterpillars eat most of what I grow. Last week I thought I was really getting somewhere with my cucumbers but my stupid Fu***ng dog decided to dig them up. And then theres the weather. Thank goodness for shops.
Growing your own is not to difficult. The best thing to do is start with just a few like potatoes, peas, tomatoes etc. Then if you find that you would like to do more you can. Trying to do too much too soon might make you think that it's not worth it. We have been growing our own fruit, veg & salad stuff for the past 4 years and have found the taste to be very superior to that which you buy from the supermarket. Good luck
It hasn't been so easy for me. I grow peppers and they are the only things I know that grow easily except squash, okra and some herbs. Most fruit trees seem to need some cold weather to set the fruit or die from cold weather (citrus). Figs grow well but animals get them fast when they ripen. Good luck.
Begin with the soil. That spare patch full of stones and dogs **** will NOT do. If you have an open, weed-free area, with GOOD quality soil with well dug in compost or horse manure, then you will have a huge head start. Then (to a small extent) you can simply plant and water. If you skimp on the soil quality, you will restrict variety, suffer more pests and poorer results. It is easy given the right ingredients !
easy and rewarding.
Start small or you'll soon be overwhelmed and frustrated. Pick your two or three favorite fruits or veggies and start asking more "questions". Call your local County Agent and find a Master Gardener volunteer in your area, we're here to help.
Id have to say yes, its about that easy.. However you want to make sure that you have some protection from weeds... A lot of people buy black plastic that you poke holes in to allow your fruits/veggies to come through but it blocks all the weeds etc.. I also have 3 rabbits that I collect some of their droppings from and put it in with the soil before I plant the seeds. Its great fertilizer and we have had some of the largest and healtiest fruits and veggies in town!
