How thick should flagstone steps be?

Question:

Answers:
An ideal step riser height is 5.5 - 7.5". Sometimes your municipality will define the minimum and maximum riser height. Check your local codes. They may also define a maximum variance between steps. If you are using a flagstone snap step or outcropping step, dry to get consistent thicknesses in that 5.5 - 7.5" range. If you are veneering concrete steps, you can get by with 1" flag with a reduced overhang, but 2 - 2.5" tread material always looks better.

If you are going to mount them on concrete, you can go with 1/2 inch. Otherwise get the thickest ones you can afford.
