Question:I read if you combine hens feces and sea weed it can keep water? In general do you have any idea how to have a pot and a plant so that It does need too much watering and you can use water more efficiently?
Answers:
Potting soil would be best. Don't buy the cheapest that you can find, and don't buy topsoil in a bag. It will get hard and it's not good for the plants. Besides a good potting soil, if you want the best thing for retention of moisture, I suggest using plastic pots, not Terra cotta which are very porous you would have to water every day in the heat of the summer. I don't know about sea weed, it sounds like a light sort of substance to me and perhaps not able to retain moisture and hens feces would be for fertilization.
Use plastic pots, but place them in a decorative container and cover the area between the edge of the decorative pot and the plant with peat moss for a finished look.
There is an additive you can purchase at any nursery that will help the soil to retain water. It is similar to the stuff that is found in disposable diapers.
Hope this helps.
The best garden I ever grew was not in a pot, but my yard. Everyone said you can't grow there the grass will take it over in no time. So I thought about it and then went to busy beaver and bought a couple of rolls of tar paper. My friend rototilled it beautifully, soft rich black loam soil. Then I rolled out the tar paper, bought my plants and cut an X every 12" or 24" where I wanted my plants to be spaced and planted. I had 4 rows of corn in the back. and I cut the tar paper in half length-wise. Left about an inch of space inbetween the paper and planted my corn seed.
I tamped with my feet along the planted rows to make them slightly lower so the rain would run into the plant where I wanted it to go. Next I watered, I saturated the soil. And I only had to water 2 more times because of a heat wave that was over 92 for 10 days straight. If it wasn't for that I would never have had to water the garden. I yielded so much produce no-one could believe me. The tar paper holds in the moisture and absorbs the heat to keep the plants warm at night and they grow like wild. Hope you can try this method. It is a little more work to get it planted, but after that all you do is watch it grow.
You will be able to walk threw the plants and pick things without getting mud on your shoes either. The tar paper sticks to the ground, unlike black plastic that blows away and makes you slip and slide. You can get several years out of the tar paper too. Growing is so much fun. I had 2 ears of corn on every stalk that year and I was told I planted it too close. When weeds aren't taking out all of the nutrients you put in and the plants don't have to stuggle for them, Your garden grows fast and beautiful. Good Luck
Potting soil is a great way to have soil that doesn't need much watering. When I was in school I worked in the schools greenhouse for 3 years and I had alot of pots at home in which I grew flowers and vegetables. I pretty much had a garden just in pots on my back porch. All of my plants grew good and all I used was Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Soil and just a little bit of water once to twice a week depending on how hot it was. The Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Soil gives you all the nutrients of regular potting soil plus the added nutrients of Miracle-Gro fertilizer. Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Soil usually cost $5-$15 at your local Walmart. I'd recommend using that. I hope this helps!
Too much held water in a container causes root rot. you need to have drainage in the container in order to be sure your plants survive.
Use LARGE containers and good quality potting soil.. a larger soil mass takes less frequent waterings. plant plants that don't require a lot of water (like sedums) if you don't want to water often.
just mixing up stuff willy-nilly might work 5% of the time.. I'd suggest finding composted manure if you plan on using it.. just remember that if sh*t is what you're putting into the mix.. it may be that that you get out..
+If you mix peat moss, soil and perilite or vermeculite your soil will hold moisture alot better than just soil. You can buy bags of perilite and peat moss at walmart for about 3.00.
Use a good potting soil and mix in polymer crystals. The crystals are harmless and keep the soil moist. Miracle Gro makes a potting soil with polymer crystals - Moisture Control.
You can buy a packet of these little ball things to mix into your soil so that when you water the plant these balls soak in water and it is slowly released ,keeping the plant watered for longer-you buy them at the nursery.
