Rabbits ate my weeping cherry. Growing back, if I cut off the top and graft back on will it be weeping again?
Question:Rabbits chewed around the trunk of my young weeping cherry tree. It's grown back to about 4 feet, but no longer weeping. I've seen them in stores with what appears to be a large grafted area near the top. Is that how they make them weeping and can I fix mine? Thanks!
Answers:
Yes and no - kinda and sorta. Your cherry may be the result of one or two grafts. One would be the root grafted to the trunk, two would be the trunk grafted to the weepy. Now with that said, lets try to make your cherry cry again. This is going to take 2-3 years to get it back the way it was, so if your into instant gratification go buy another tree. Lets assume your tree didn't have a root graft, then your 4ft. sucker should be large enough to graft next spring. In the meantime try to locate a donor tree for your weepy, a neighbor or nursery, should let you have a 2ft. twig of new growth for your project. In the early spring just as the buds begin to swell, cut your sapling off to 5-6ft and graft four 6" pieces of your freshly cut donor weepy to the top, and you'll be cry'n again. This all very simplified but you have all winter to learn how to graft. I remember being very intimidated by grafting until I tried it. All that's required is a keen eye, nimble fingers and a sharp knife. RScott
